About 120 students from Secondary Schools in Gatsibo District have been trained on gender equality and children’s rights as a way to curb school dropouts and unplanned pregnancies among secondary students in the District.
The training was organized by Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Rwanda andPlan Rwanda and it mainly explained to the students’ trainees the gender equality and the children rights among the other things.
Students in the training on their rights
Encouraging female students to take up work that was conventionally known as male work, knowing that every child has a right to education and the responsibilities of parents to fulfill the rights of children were among the fully explained subjects.
Thelesphore Kabera who works with FAWE Rwanda says this training will be of much importance and will yield desired results in secondary schools of Gatsibo district and in families of the students who attended it.
This training will hopefully reduce the rates of school dropouts and unwanted and untimely pregnancies in Gatsibo district which was the main reasons for the training in the first place.
Jovia Kirabo a student of Rwikiniro Secondary School in Rwimbogo sector says she is going to fight for her rights and for her fellow students as well as the non school going youth.
For Gatsibo district to be still affected by a large number of school dropouts and untimely pregnancies is mainly because students do not understand their rights as well gender equalities and hopefully this training will achieve its goal and solve these problems.
The 3 days training was attended by 120 teenagers’ students with 60 males and 60 females from 20 schools of Gatsibo district.
