Students have been urged to focus on their studies and desist from drug abuse, which might destroy their future.
The call was made by the Director of Community Policing in Rwanda National Police Superintendent Sam Rumanzi, while meeting students of Groupe Scolaire Kabare in Rwamagana District.
The event held at the school campus is part of the ongoing five-day awareness campaign against drugs in secondary schools, which started on March 11. About 100 schools will be reached in the course of the week.
Rumanzi urged the students to say “no” to drug abuse and report all those that are involved or want to lure them into the illegal act.
He also asked girls to challenge men that try to lure them into sexual acts, adding that it comes with dangers like HIV infection, unwanted pregnancies and school dropouts.
“Commit yourselves to your studies and listen to your teachers because your future depends on what you are doing now,” he told the students, adding that the future of the country is in the hands of the youth.
Police also held a meeting with the school administration, shortly, which recommended that such awareness campaigns be held regularly and that establishing anti-crime clubs will supplement efforts against drug abuse.
The National Police recently announced that plans are underway to establish anti-crime clubs in all the 1466 secondary schools in the country. Currently, only 504 schools have anti-crime clubs.
